Ghana has announced the reopening of its air borders to international travel from September 1.

International passenger flights were suspended in March after the country recorded cases of the coronavirus.

The suspension of the international flights was to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

On Sunday Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo said there is a drastic reduction in active Covid-19 cases, giving him enough confidence to reopen the country’s air borders.

“Fellow Ghanaians, I am glad to announce that Kotoka International Airport will reopen and resume operations from Tuesday, 1st September 2020. This decision has been communicated to international airlines.”

Domestic flights already resumed weeks ago, allowing passengers to observe health protocols such as wearing of nose-masks.

Land and sea borders will remain closed, the President said in his speech on Sunday.

The president said all travellers arriving in Ghana will have to present proof of a negative Covid-19 test result done within 72 hours before departure.

Passengers will also pay for another test on arrival at the airport with result provided within 30 minutes. Children under five will not be tested though.
